Kent “Captain” Bigalow, age 76, passed away on August 17, 2018. Born on February 14, 1942, Kent dedicated his life to serving others. He was an active member of the Aspen Elks Lodge #224 for over 20 years. During his tenure with the Elks, Kent helped host numerous charitable events, and was named Officer of the Year in 2001. During these events, Kent could often be found behind the grill flipping burgers with a big grin on his face. Kent’s philanthropy extended to other charitable organizations within the community. He was a committed volunteer with the Shining Stars Foundation, devoting hundreds of hours to the foundation’s programs and events for children with cancer.
“Captain’s heart was so big and his zest for enjoying life so compelling. He never knew a stranger and welcomed anyone he met to join his circle of volunteering efforts, whether it be for the Elks Lodge or the Shining Stars. He always arrived early and stayed late no matter what the event was and no matter how tired he was. He dedicated his life to giving back and making a difference in the children’s lives.” — Kathy Gingery, CEO & Founder of the Shining Stars Foundation
Kent was an avid skier and competed in local NASTAR races. Kent also loved games of skill and luck. He especially enjoyed playing mahjong, backgammon, bridge, and cribbage with his friends at the Pitkin County Senior Center. He was knowledgeable about cell phones, computers, and even 3D printing, and he loved to help people with their technology questions.
“Captain” lived life with great joy and happiness, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him. There will be a ceremony for Kent Bigalow at the Red Butte Cemetery on October 8th at 5pm, followed by a celebration of life at the Aspen Elks Lodge.
